Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Taijiquan, is an ancient internal Chinese martial art recognized for its extensive health benefits. Commonly practiced at a slow pace, it enhances balance, strength, and vitality; however, the martial aspects are often overlooked.
This discipline fits within the Wudang classification of Chinese martial arts, utilizing internal power (jing) and Qi (energy). The lineage of Yang-style postures can be traced back through historical connections to Wudang Mountain and Shaolin Temple, evolving from movements rooted in "Chang Quan" (Long Fist), named after the winding Yangtze River. A significant figure in its development is philosopher Xu Xuan-Ping, who, around 800 AD, created a kung fu system comprising 37 forms that include familiar Tai Chi movements such as:

- Step Up to Seven Stars
- Jade Lady Works the Shuttles
- High Pat on Horse
- Phoenix Flaps Its Wings
The concept of "Taiji Chang Quan" showcased various interpretations before evolving into what we know today as Taijiquan. Historical forms like the "Heavenly-Inborn Style" and "Nine Small Heavens" share common traits with Taijiquan, emphasizing principles of softness, adherence, and utilizing an opponent's momentum. The foundational teachings attributed to Bodhidharma at Shaolin Temple around 550 AD, which emphasized guiding Qi with the mind, underpin all Internal Martial Arts including Tai Chi.
Grandmaster Liang boasts an extensive family lineage in martial arts spanning five generations. His training commenced in 1948 under the guidance of his grandfather with traditional Emei kungfu and Qigong. Throughout his career, he sought knowledge from renowned masters across various styles including Shaolin and Wudang. In the early 1960s, he honed his skills in major Taiji styles such as Yang, Chen, Sun, and Wu while also studying Buddhist Esoteric Qigong and Taoist Qigong. Grandmaster Liang has earned multiple gold medals in Wushu and Taiji competitions within Sichuan province and currently teaches in Vancouver, Canada.
